Lives of the Saints Essay Example

Lives of the Saints Essay Example Lives of the Saints Essay Lives of the Saints Essay Where are you going? asked her I have an appointment. With who? With the man who cuts the birdies off boys who ask too many questions. Rice, 2) This quotation shows that Christina cheats on her husband with a blue-eyed man. After everyone knows about her having affair with another man, and gossiping about her. Cheating on a husband is very bad for the husbands reputation; it shows that the husband, a head of the house, cannot control a woman. Which means that the husband Is a weak person. Secondly, Christina does not appreciate her husbands help. For example, she does not take money that her husband sends to her: l brought you something from your husband, he said after a pause he reached Into an Inside octet and handed my mother an envelope Whats this? The man shrugged. Something to get you through the winter. He sends me money through the band, my mother said. He probably needs this more than I do (Rice, 96) In this example, Christina shows that she does not need money from her husband, and she can take care of herself without his help. It represents her husband as a weak person that cannot help himself. Thirdly, Christina gossips about her own husband. For example, Christina talks to the husbands friend: I hear hes living In a chicken coop. Its a room attached to Umber Did Mannas barn, Alfred said. He must have told you In his letters. They fixed It up so he has water and electricity. he doesnt tell me anything In his letters, my mother said. he only complains. Here, look for yourself. She scanned quickly the letter the man had given her. Ah, perfecto, here Make sure Vitriol has some warm clothes for the winter. And I should feel lucky he reminds me, because otherwise the poor boy would run around naked. (Ri ce, 96) In this quotation, Christina gossips about her husband, which makes her husband look ad. Finally, Christina is a bad wife role model. Christina does not care about her child, which represents her as a bad mom. First of all, Christina does not care about Vitriols studying in school. For example, Vitriol talks about her mother and how she cares about his studying La maestro had paid a visit to my mother one afternoon, to advise her of my truancy and vices; but my mother had only laughed. (Rica, 3). It shows that Vitriols mom does not care about his studying; however, every mom has to know how her child does in school. Secondly, Violator must share with his mother, about what he does everyday. For example, the quotation says: My attendance at school had not bee very regular it Ana someone Taller out Tanat l a spent much AT class tale wandering up to ten top AT Cole did Papa or down to the river with my friend Barrio, sharing with him the cigarettes he filched from his father. (Rice, 3) In this example Vitriol shows that he misses his classes with his friend, while his mom thinks that he does go to school; however, a good mom would always know what her child does. In the end, Christina is a bad mom role model. Christina represents her father in a bad way; after what her father loses his Job. She does not do work that she supposed to do at home. For example, the grandfather talks to Christina: You couldnt have made some soup? My grandfather said, but my mother did not turn away from the fire.

Ambitiously Authentic What Ive Learned about Funding My Dream

Ambitiously Authentic What Ive Learned about Funding My Dream Ive lost count of the scholarship and residency applications Ive had rejected. But in 2014, I won a scholarship to the Wesleyan Writers Conference, and this year I was honored to be an Artist in Residence at Trail Wood, the memorial sanctuary and former home of nature writer Edwin Way Teale. Ive thought about the difference between my prior attempts and my wins, and here are a few lessons I learned: Go local: FundsforWriters (FFW) often lists state- or region-specific grants - watch for them! Far-away locales dont necessarily equal prestige or a higher level of success. My motivations for going local were at least in part due to limited time and money for travel, but familiarity with the physical locations (both in Connecticut, my home state) and the local culture made a difference in terms of how I penned my applications, and, probably, how judges accepted them. Go niche: Even if your work crosses genres, take ownership of a specific writing category. When I finally figured out that nature writing was my thing, the tide began to shift. When I applied for the writers conference scholarship, my voice took on a more confident tone as I talked about my specialty. In the case of the residency, the Connecticut Audubon Society sought writers with a strong interest in nature. Again, FFW lists many of these niche awards for categories such as mystery writers, journalists, or specific demographic groups. Be yourself: In all forms of writing, genuine shines through. My applications included enthusiasm and revelations about my personality, while being careful not to overdo it Dont skimp on research: If you are able to visit the physical location of your opportunity, do it to get a feel for the place. But whether or not a visit is possible, research the history of the award and its former recipients and read descriptions of the place/event. This will engender a tone that reflects in-depth understanding of the award. Besides being able to visit my intended award locales, I scoured the application websites and other sources for details that resonated with me and informed my submission. Plan ahead and pace yourself: Savvy research and authenticity wont help if you arent practical about writing well in advance of deadline, allowing time for many rewrites. Setting milestone dates and reminders in my electronic calendar helped me stay on track. Its also important to avoid trigger finger. Like many writers, I tend to send work out prematurely, driven Choose your readers carefully: Read up on the contest judges; consider that in some cases the judges are not writers. Ask trusted friends/colleagues to read your work, paying close attention to their overall reactions and specific comments. In my case, the input of some carefully chosen nonwriters was as valuable as that of my peers. It should go without saying that you also need to pay attention to technicalities - word count limits, writing sample format, etc. Check your work against the guidelines a final time. When you hit the send button or the post office, you can be confident that youve done your best and improved your odds. In my case, the work I put in was rewarded many times over in a sense of fulfillment at finally finding funding for a longstanding dream. I wish the same for every hardworking writer.

IPv6 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

IPv6 - Essay Example The 32-bit addressing system employs packet switching to facilitate communication. IPv4 can thus be treated as an upgrade of IPV4, to improve the IP protocol system. There are a number of significant dereferences between the two protocols that will be essential in determining one’s choice for usage. Discussed below are the major differences: Address length- IPv4 is a 32 bit address while IPv6 is a 128 bit. This is the basic difference observable at a glance. These DNS names differ by a wide margin if compared by the number of addresses each can yield. In fact, to completely cover the IPv6 address, it is written in hexadecimal numbers as compared to IPv4 written in dotted decimal numbers. This forms of representation are all interpreted in form of binary numbers by the computers (Huitema, 1996). Packet header-generally, packet headers are always affixed at the start of Internet protocol addresses. It normally contains the address of the destination of a given packet. IPv4 has got packet headers only. This differs from IPv6 that has the header, although with more advanced functionalities. The header of IPv4 is 20 bits as compared to the 40 bits of IPv6. The advancement in the header allows addition of extension headers, a functionality not provided for by IPv4 computers (Huitema, 1996). Address resolution- the process of address resolution involves mapping of various IP addresses to the MAC address or rather, a link address. IPv4 employs the RFC 826. This is an Ethernet address resolution protocol. This resolution protocol has over the years exposed users to cyber threats because the protocol is within the link layer. IPv6 on the other hand makes use of Neighbor discovery Address resolution. Its protection is secured because the IPSec is employed to secure the connection in tunnel or transport mode (Amoss, & Minoli, 2008). Configuration- users of IPv4 have to ensure all configurations are done prior to internet usage. The IP address and routes

Quality Management - Group Work Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Quality Management - Group Work - Research Paper Example It begins from the initial preparation, through the group process up to compilation of the final paper. I highly commend the timeliness of the group. The group met immediately after its formation giving it enough time to tackle the tasks it had before it. I can therefore describe the group members as very organized individuals who acknowledge the importance of time management. Without time management, a group is likely to suffer from a last-minute rush (John, 2005). During the preparation, some group members drafted a schedule which would be used to track developments in the group-work. The schedule led to some conflicts since some group members had not been consulted. There were some communication barriers which arose due to a heated debate regarding the schedule. The former draft had been drawn with the assumption that the personal schedules of individuals were almost similar. Though schedules are important in projects, Accountability through 360 ° feedback is important (Stephen, 1999). This model of feedback was used in formation of the final schedule which was more agreeable. I was very pleased by the problem solving techniques used by the group. This included open communication and consultation before making decision that ultimately affect the whole group (Isa, 2012). The idea to formulate a schedule to manage the operations of the group was a brilliant idea. I suggested a SWOT analysis on group members’ personal traits. This was unanimously agreed on. A SWOT analysis is important in determining the overall strengths and weaknesses of a group (Howard, 2000). It is also important in understanding the character traits of group members in order to know which tasks to assign to a member. After the SWOT analysis was completed, the group members became more familiar with their fellow members. This improves group dynamics (John, 2010). The actual group process began by identification of the task to be undertaken. The group decided to work on formulating and implementing a quality management strategy. After thorough consultations between members, the group members agreed to meet on a later day with names of organization they believe needed a change in their management systems. On the immediately following meeting, one group member proposed the University of Western Sydney as the organization. The group agreed to make the management strategy of UWS the subject matter. I believe availability of data and the existence of a clear problem statement were the main reasons why this organization was selected (Comite Euro-International du Beton, 1998). The team formed an objective of its own in order to avoid drifting from the course objectives. The object of the team was similar to the title of the project. Although the title of the project was manipulated severally, I found this to be vital since it aligned the objectives of the group, those of the project itself and those of the course. The title of the research project became: â€Å"Qual ity Management Strategy for an improved system of Teaching and Learning: University of West Sydney†. Member of the group were asked to perform an overview of the university’s history and management system. This was important to increase familiarity of the members with the project at hand (Julia, 2012). One of the group members proposed that a PESTLE analysis would be best in performing a background check. This is one of the most efficient ways of understanding a management system of any organization (Jay, 2003). After the members became

Mexican Lives by Judith Adler Hellman Essay -- Mexican Lives Judith Ad

Mexican Lives by Judith Adler Hellman   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The author of Mexican Lives, Judith Adler Hellman, grapples with the United States’ economic relationship with their neighbors to the south, Mexico. It also considers, through many interviews, the affairs of one nation. It is a work held to high esteem by many critics, who view this work as an essential part in truly understanding and capturing Mexico’s history. In Mexican Lives, Hellman presents us with a cast from all walks of life. This enables a reader to get more than one perspective, which tends to be bias. It also gives a more inclusive view of the nation of Mexico as a whole. Dealing with rebel activity, free trade, assassinations and their transition into the modern age, it justly captures a Mexico in its true light. All walks of life are presented, from prevailing businessmen of white-collar status, to those of the working class and labor industry, as well as individuals who deal in the black market of smuggling illegal immigrants across the border into the U.S. Hellman’s work explores the subject of Mexico’s economic situation in the 1990s. NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) closely tied the United States and Mexico during this period, as well as similar policies such as GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) that were also created. These issues pertaining to economic policies between the two nations, Mexico and the United States are seen highlighted throughout her work. Hellman opens with three individuals at three different times. The reader is first introduced to Lupe Gonzalez at 3 A.M., whose story is a harsh reality for many. She lives in the vecindad of San Miguel Iztacalco where â€Å"eighteen families in eighteen single-room dwellings share a single water tap in the courtyard†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (pg.15) This is the daily life for many other Mexican families, as well as families from all over Latin America. She lives in a single room home with six children and her second husband. The reason for the set time is due to a schedule that each family must abide by, in order to obtain a simple necessity of life, water for their â€Å"drinking, bathing, cooking, and household cleaning.† (pg.15) With this the reader witnesses how there isn’t even enough water for all members of the community and city for constant usage. They share three beds for all eight family members and make considerably less then minimum... ...ople extort from others. It’s a way of life†¦ The NAFTA treaty isn’t meant to rescue people like us, it’s meant to help the rich" (pg. 157) Later, the reader learns that Maria was driven out of business by competators after NAFTA took effect. Mexican Lives is a rare piece of literature that accounts for the human struggle of an underdeveloped nation, which is kept impoverished in order to create wealth for that of another nation, the United States. The reader is shown that the act of globalization and inclusion in the world’s economies, more directly the United States, is not always beneficial to all parties involved. The data and interviews, which Hellman has put forth for her readers, contain some aspect of negativity that has impacted their lives by their nation’s choice to intertwine their economy with that of the United States. Therefore it can only be concluded that the entering into world markets, that of Mexico into the United States, does not always bring on positive outcomes. Thus, one sees that Mexico has become this wasteland of economic excrement; as a result it has become inherently reliant on the United States. Work Cited: Judith A. Hellman: Mexican Lives.

Conditional Love †How to Love Essay

Do you feel the sting of being rejected? Do your closest friends and even family push you away or mistreat you? I think that every emotionally healthy person wants to love and to be loved. We want people to love us as we are. We want to feel accepted no matter what we may say or do. When we make a mistake, we want to be forgiven and we don’t want to experience rejection. We want to be loved unconditionally. A problem comes though when we do not reciprocate unconditional love. For example, there will never be real love expressed between two people if both individuals are seeking to have their needs met. How can two people make a relationship work if both define love as, â€Å"if you love me then you will do what I want†? There is only one person who can truly love unconditionally. His name is Jesus. See, God is perfect and demands perfection from us. But, we all have fallen short of living a perfect life and that is called sin. The penalty for sin is death. But, this penalty is too great for us to pay! The Bible says that God demonstrated themeaning of love to us in this that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus laid down His life for us as the ultimate act of unconditional love. He accepts us for who we are, for what we have done, and even for what we have neglected to do. But, now He is asking us to accept Him unconditionally as well. He wants us to accept His love by giving to Him our heart, mind, soul, and strength. He wants all of us. When we give ourselves over completely to Jesus then we are â€Å"fully known, fully accepted, fully loved, fully valued, and fully celebrated.† Jesus will never leave you, quit on you, belittle you, or even condemn you. Did you know that the Bible says that Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world but to save the world? He came to show you what love is. Once we experience His love, we must step forward quickly to embrace it. The Bible provides an excellent description of unconditional love and gives us a pattern to follow. What is real love? Here is an example, â€Å"Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, †¦ Love rejoices with the truth. Love believes and endures all things. Love never fails.† The longing of your heart to be loved unconditionally can be fulfilled only through Jesus Christ. You must admit your sin, believe in Jesus, and follow His ways. If you do, you will experience unconditional love. Once you have experienced love unconditionally, you are then able to know how to love as well.

French Number Expressions - Confusing Pairs

There are several confusing pairs and difficult expressions related to French numbers. Floor System Differences The numbering system of the floors in a building may be difficult for American English speakers.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  American English  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  British English Rez-de-chaussà ©e  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First floor  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ground floor Premier à ©tage  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Second floor  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First floor Deuxià ¨me à ©tage  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Third floor  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Second floor The meaning of premier changes depending on the preposition that precedes it.
